Same-Day Dental Emergencies in Stafford: When to Call and What We Can Do

If you're dealing with a dental emergency right now, I want you to know something first: you don't have to figure this out alone. Whether it's sudden tooth pain, a broken tooth, or something that just doesn't feel right, we're here for you — and we can often see you the same day.

At Advanced Dental Care of Stafford, we set aside time specifically for patients who need urgent care. Let me walk you through what counts as a dental emergency, when to call us, and what you can expect when you come in.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A lot of patients aren't sure whether their situation is serious enough to call. My honest answer? If something is hurting, worrying you, or feels "off" — that's enough of a reason to reach out. You don't need to meet some threshold of pain before you're allowed to ask for help.

That said, here are some situations we see most often that typically need same-day attention.

Tooth Pain That Won't Go Away

Mild sensitivity after cold food is one thing. But if you have a deep, throbbing ache that's been going on for more than a day — or pain that wakes you up at night — that often points to something that needs to be looked at right away. In many cases, an infection or a damaged nerve is involved, and waiting can make things more complicated. Root canal therapy is one of the most common ways we help patients find relief in situations like this.

A Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Tooth

A broken tooth can range from a minor chip to a crack that reaches the root. If you're in pain, or if the tooth has broken near the gumline, please call us. Even if it doesn't hurt yet, sharp edges can cause real damage to your gums and tongue, and getting it addressed quickly gives us the best chance to protect the tooth.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

This one needs fast action. If a tooth has been knocked out completely, handle it gently by the crown (the white part you see when you smile), rinse it lightly with water if it's dirty, and try to keep it moist — placing it back in the socket, or in a small container with milk, can help. Then call us immediately. Time matters a lot in these situations.

A Lost Filling or Crown

If a crown or filling falls out, it can leave the tooth exposed and sensitive. It's not always an emergency, but it can become one if the area gets damaged or infected. Give us a call and we'll help you figure out how quickly you need to come in.

Swelling in Your Mouth, Jaw, or Face

Swelling — especially if it comes with pain, fever, or difficulty swallowing — can be a sign of a dental infection that needs care right away. Please don't wait on this one. Infections can spread, and getting treated early makes a real difference.

What Happens When You Call Us

When you call our office with an urgent concern, we're not going to put you on hold and tell you to wait three weeks. We do our best to get you in the same day, especially for situations involving pain or swelling.

When you arrive, I'll take a look and explain what I'm seeing in plain language — no overwhelming you with technical details. My goal is for you to understand what's going on and feel comfortable with your options before we do anything. You're always in control of your care, and we'll take it step by step.

If you're nervous — that's okay. Many people feel that way, especially if it's been a while since their last visit, or if they've had a difficult dental experience in the past. We'll go at your pace. You can pause at any time. We will take good care of you.

Can Same-Day Emergency Visits Lead to More Treatment?

Sometimes, yes — and I'll always be upfront about that. In some cases, what we find during an emergency visit means we'll want to follow up with additional treatment, like a root canal, a crown, or other restorative work. I'll walk you through what I recommend, explain why, and answer any questions you have. There's no pressure, ever. The decision is yours.

When Should You Go to the ER Instead?

If you're having trouble breathing or swallowing, or if swelling is spreading rapidly to your throat or neck, please go to an emergency room right away. These can be signs of a serious infection that goes beyond dental care. Once you're medically stable, we're here to help with the dental side of things.

FAQ: Same-Day Dental Emergencies

Q: I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is a real emergency. Should I still call?

Yes, please call. We'd rather you reach out and find out it's minor than stay home wondering. Our team can help you decide over the phone whether you need to come in right away.

Q: What if I haven't been to a dentist in years? Will I be judged?

Not even a little. People come back to dental care from all kinds of situations and time gaps, and that's completely normal. Our only focus is helping you feel better and taking care of your mouth going forward. You're welcome here, always.

Q: How much will an emergency visit cost?

Investment varies based on what we find and what care is needed. We're happy to talk through your options and any financial questions during your visit. Treatment plans vary based on individual needs, and we'll always explain costs before moving forward.

Q: What can I do at home while I wait to come in?

For pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily. For a lost crown or broken tooth, dental cement from a pharmacy can help protect the area. Avoid very hot, cold, or hard foods. And please don't ignore swelling — if it's getting worse, contact us right away.

If you have questions or something doesn't feel right, we're here to help. Give us a call and let's figure it out together.
